Shelby Jean Gull (formerly Laird) is the Head of the Certification Protection Administrative Branch of the Public Water Supply Section of the NC Division of Water Resources, and an Adjunct Professor at NC State University. Prior to that, she worked at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, NC as the Director of Evaluation & Project Management and she was the Head of the Whiteville Branch of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Whiteville, NC for over 4 years. She was an academic at various universities, including Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, Charles Sturt University in Albury-Wodonga, Australia, and Auburn University (stationed at Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory, a USFS Southern Research Station experimental forest site).Shelby has four years of high school science teaching experience as well as over 4 years as an environmental education state program coordinator.
Shelby is currently focusing her research on social and environmental justice, inclusive practices in organizations, human dimensions of natural resources management, and environmental education.
Shelby has worked as an independent consultant for 12 years, including past curriculum development in environmental education (as an example: program evaluation and curriculum development for the New York Restoration Project, What's Good in My Hood?). Shelby has consulted on various grant proposals, projects, community and inclusion initiatives, and writing projects. She is a past board member of the Texas Association for Environmental Education and a Past-President of Environmental Educators of North Carolina (EENC).
With her experience in education and natural resources, Shelby has a unique appreciation for both global and local environments and a great interest in educating others about conservation and getting people outside. She works to be sure that people of all backgrounds have a voice in environmental, science, education, and natural resource causes, and spends a good deal of time supporting the work of others in order to lift us all up together. Shelby currently resides with her daughter Patricia who is an inspiration and her partner Vinny. They share a apartment with two dogs, Luna and Roscoe (a foster fail), one cockatiel, Ferry, and sometimes a foster dog.
